This was the condition of one fire put on a garbage near the petrol pump opposite Honda Showroom next to Woodys hotel, on the road from BTM to Banashankari:
As usual, YES!+ volunteers didn’t just ignore the situation, but took prompt action. With the help of nearby people we procured water and put off the fire:
Upon closer examination, we noticed that some medical associated company/hospital/ college or whatever, had dumped its outdated stock of thousands of medicine packets:-
Medicines have chemicals of a variety of types. Can you imagine how much harmful the fumes out of burning of these chemicals be?
In the city it has become a practise to burn the garbage instead of disposing them off the city limits. Is BBMP inefficient in collection and removal of garbage? Apart from damage to environment, the immediate residents are most affected with fumes, which keep coming hours after the fire has got switched off, due to incomplete burning. Will the residents take action?
On one side, waste segregation has been started, as in Europe:- putting up the different types of wastes in different containers, at the point of collection itself, to ease the recycling process. On the other hand, the waste is not properly being collected and disposed off.
Will the media take notice of these activities?
Will you, as a responsible citizen go out and put off such fire and educate the people who are setting it up??
